Resource Guide on Practice Approaches in Treatment Foster Care
The Foster Family-based Treatment Association (FFTA) recognizes that evidence-based practice is essential to providing the best possible treatment foster care services and strongly encourages member agencies to use evidence-based practices, policies, and tools when available, feasible, and appropriate for their service participants. (Read FFTA's Position Statement on Evidence-based Practice.)
FFTA also recognizes the value in practice approaches that have not met the scientific criteria of evidence-based practice, yet hold promise for future practice. Numerous models are being developed across North America and FFTA members continually seek new ways to create positive outcomes for the children and families in their care. To meet the needs of FFTA members, and in the spirit of sharing such practices, the FFTA Research Committee established a “Resource Guide” of practice approaches that are being used in treatment foster care and other family-based services.
The FFTA Resource Guide on Practice Approaches in Treatment Foster Care creates an opportunity for agencies to share information about the interventions and practices that are working in their programs. This resource is not intended to highlight evidence-based practices in child welfare or children's mental health; there are a variety of resources on that topic already published, such as FFTA's
“Implementing Evidence-based Practice in Treatment Foster Care: A Resource Guide.”
This resource guide was developed through the issuance of a Call for Submissions that was distributed to both member and nonmember agencies. Nearly 40 submissions were received, reviewed, edited, and approved for inclusion by the Research Committee. FFTA realizes that the Resource Guide represents only a fraction of the actual practice approaches that are being used by treatment foster care programs and is committed to continuing efforts to collect information about other practices in the future.
